We have moved!

Following storm Desmond in 2015 which submerged most of Cumbria under water, we have been in the process of rebuilding our restaurant. In 2005 The Viceroy restaurant was flooded and out of business for 13 months! In what was described as a once in a lifetime disaster.10 years later it happened again.........but this time we had been washed out and forced to re locate from our home of 25 years. After we regrouped and things had settled down we searched premises all over Carlisle but to no avail. Finally we found just the right location ironically right across the road from our original location and above Ali's takeaway at Linton House on Shaddongate: Construction work is currently on going and we are scheduled to open very very soon! Any queries please do get in touch via our "Contact Us" page For all the latest news visit our blog page. See you guys soon! We...

Flooded Viceroy Restaurant in Carlisle to move

FLOOD-hit Carlisle Indian restaurant The Viceroy is set to reopen this autumn in a new home. The popular curry house was forced to close after its premises in Rigg Street, Shaddongate, were inundated with water when Storm Desmond hit the city in December. It was the second time that the Viceroy had been forced to close, having been shut for 13 months after the floods of January 2005. Owner Sukur Ali says he can no longer insure the building so has no option but to move. His intention is to reopen on the opposite side of Shaddongate. He has planning permission to create a new restaurant above Ali's takeaway, which he also owns:  He has high hopes for the new location. The restaurant will sit on the first floor of the building, and have 80 covers. Mr Ali said: "We have been flooded twice and the insurance people won't provide flood...

Carlisle curry king feels like World Cup winner

AN INDIAN restaurant owner says he feels like a footballer winning the World Cup after being given a British Curry Award – again. Sukur Ali was surprised and shocked when his Carlisle restaurant the Viceroy won the Best in the North West Award at ceremony in London on Monday. It is the second time the restaurant, on Rigg Street, Shaddongate, has won the accolade, after also coming out on top in 2013. Mr Ali said: “You know most football players dream of winning the World Cup. In our industry, everyone has a dream to win once in a lifetime a British Curry Award.” Viceroy had to beat off tough competition from 5,000 other restaurants in the north west.   Without the restaurants knowing, mystery diners came and sampled their hospitality and food before making a shortlist of four restaurants. The other three were based in Greater Manchester, Cheshire and Lancashire. When...

Carlisle's Viceroy in top two for curry houses in north west

An Indian restaurant in Carlisle has been named as the second best in the north west in a prestigious national contest known as the “Oscars of the Curry World”. The Viceroy, in Rigg Street, Shaddongate, beat thousands of rivals to clinch second place this year’s British Curry Awards in London. Speaking today, the restaurant’s boss Sukur Ali – whose restaurant was voted as the best in the region last year – said he was delighted. He said: “It was a real honour to be placed second. “There are more than 6,000 Indian restaurants in the north west so to be voted the second best was a real honour. I want to thank all the customers who nominated us.” Mr Ali, 59, who has run his restaurant in Carlisle for the last 34 years, also paid tribute to his chef Parsu Miah, who is also his nephew.
